Vista 64 bit or Windows XP x64 edition ?
A lot of hardware has driver issues with Vista. Unless Vista offers something that you just can't get with XP, I'd stick with XP. AM2 costs more because I have to spend about $200 for new RAM (DDR2) and can't use my old RAM that Athlon 64 3200+ (754) used. though you have to trust that your board manufacturer will support that, the only guarantee it'll work comes the day you plug in an AM3 CPU and it works... but it is expected to.

Should I use 64 bit Windows XP?
[snip] They are different, but "half the cpu resources" is still a great exaggeration. You do gain something from extra registers, but you lose something from larger And OS X can also run on 512mb. They can't just allocate more memory- they must create files.
